Pen fight tips
Pen fight is easy to learn and genuinely hard to master. These nine tactics are the difference between winning by luck and winning on purpose — each one with the reason it works underneath.
Fundamental
Where you touch the pen decides everything
A flick delivered at the centre of the barrel sends the pen dead straight. The same flick delivered near a tip spins it as it travels. This is not a special move — it is basic physics, and it is the single biggest lever you have.
Why it works — The impulse acts at a point. Offset from the centre of mass, it produces rotation as well as travel.
Aim past your target, not at it
Hitting the exact centre of the opposing pen transfers a clean push. If there is desk behind it, that push just relocates the problem. Aim at the half of the pen nearest the edge so the hit carries it over.
Why it works — Off-centre contact adds rotation to the target, and a spinning pen travels further before it stops.
Half power wins more rounds than full power
Full power sends your own pen most of the way across the desk — which is exactly where you do not want to be sitting when your opponent takes their turn. Short, controlled shots win series.
Why it works — You lose the round if your own pen goes off. Overhitting is the most common way to lose, not being outplayed.
Positional
Park in the middle
The safest place on the desk is the centre. Ending your turn there means your opponent needs two good hits instead of one, and any overhit of theirs sails past you.
Why it works — Distance to the nearest edge is the only thing standing between you and losing the round.
Never end your turn side-on to a strong pen
A pen lying across the line of attack is a wide target. If your opponent has a heavy pen and a clear run, turn yours so it presents a tip rather than a flank.
Why it works — A hit near the tip glances and spins; a hit flush on the flank transfers almost all of the momentum.
Pen choice
A light pen shoves harder — and dies easier
A flick delivers the same impulse to every pen, so a lighter pen leaves your finger faster and hands more speed to whatever it hits. It is also the easiest pen on the desk to knock off. Pick your poison.
Why it works — The speed handed to the pen you hit is 2J / (your mass + their mass). Lighter you, bigger shove.
A heavy pen is a wall, not a hammer
Heavy pens resist being moved, which makes them superb defensively. They do not hit harder — that is the common misconception. They travel less far per flick and shove less on contact.
Why it works — Same fixed impulse, more mass, so less velocity out of the flick and less speed transferred on impact.
Advanced
Use spin to reach around a blocker
When a direct line is covered, grab your pen well off centre and let the rotation curl the shot. It is far less accurate, but it reaches angles a straight shot cannot.
Why it works — The pen rotates as it slides, so contact happens at a different angle than the one you aimed along.
Play the round, not the shot
A shot that leaves your opponent teetering on the edge with you safe in the middle is worth more than a spectacular hit that puts you both in danger. Best of five rewards patience.
Why it works — You only need to be on the desk when they fall off. There are no points for style.
